Trace is a climate tech company that helps businesses measure, reduce, and offset their carbon emissions. With a strong focus on making climate action accessible to small and medium enterprises, Trace developed a platform to simplify the process of carbon reporting and management. The project involved two main streams of work: UX and UI design of the client-facing platform, and the creation of branded marketing collateral. The design work focused on making the digital experience intuitive, approachable, and easy to navigate for users unfamiliar with sustainability reporting. In parallel, marketing deliverables included Carbon Management Reports for Trace’s clients, carbon certification badges, social media graphics, and event materials that reinforced the brand’s mission and supported its communication goals.

challenges & Approach

The design process centred on usability and clarity. The platform deals with technical environmental data, so the interface needed to make information feel accessible and engaging. Interfaces were structured to highlight the most important insights, supported by visual elements such as charts and progress indicators that helped users track their carbon footprint and reporting progress. The UX and UI were developed in close collaboration with Trace’s product and engineering teams, enabling a design system that could scale with the platform’s growth and maintain consistency throughout the user journey.

A key challenge in this project was translating complex climate data into formats that felt intuitive and non-intimidating. Most users were not experts in carbon reporting, and many were encountering sustainability metrics for the first time, which meant the design had to communicate information in a way that was easy to understand without losing accuracy. This was resolved by structuring the platform around simple workflows, using plain language, and incorporating visual elements like charts, progress bars, and summaries that highlighted key insights. These design choices helped reduce cognitive load and guided users step-by-step through reporting and analysis tasks.

The redesigned platform contributed to strong user growth, with businesses increasingly adopting Trace as their carbon management partner. The improved interface made it easier for users to navigate emissions reporting workflows, interpret their data, and take meaningful climate action. Positive feedback from clients reflected higher satisfaction and engagement with the platform’s usability and visual clarity.

Branded assets also played a key role in amplifying the company’s reach. Clients frequently used the carbon certification badges across their websites and social profiles, strengthening both Trace’s visibility and their own sustainability narratives. The social media templates and event materials helped establish a consistent and recognisable brand presence across digital and physical touchpoints. Overall, the combined improvements in user experience and brand design supported Trace’s continued growth across Australia and international markets.
